Amazon Main Image Requirements (2026), With a Free Checker

Amazon suppresses listings whose main image breaks its rules, and the rules are strict: a pure white background, the product filling the frame, no text or extras. Here is the checklist in one place, plus a free checker that measures your image in your browser.

Updated 13 October 2026

The short answer

  • Pure white background, RGB 255, 255, 255.
  • The product fills about 85% of the frame and is not cropped.
  • At least 1000px on the longest side so zoom works (500px is the absolute minimum).
  • No text, logos, watermarks, badges, props or extra items that are not included.

Free Amazon main image checker

Pick a photo to measure it against the rules that can be measured. It runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

This checks size, file type, file size, edge whiteness, fill and shape. It cannot see text, logos, props, extra items or whether the photo matches the real product, so check those yourself. Category style guides on Seller Central can be stricter.

Example before (AI-made sample photo) and our model's output

A real example: snapshot to white background

We ran a phone-style snapshot of a tumbler on a kitchen counter through our free white-background tool, then measured the result with the checker above.

PromptPure white, soft shadow

The background looks white, but it would not pass as a main image as downloaded: it is 768x560 (under 1000px), only about 41% of the edge pixels in the model’s JPEG output were exactly RGB 255, the tumbler fills about 76% of the height, and free downloads carry a small mark. Use it as a preview, or fix size and fill before uploading.

The before photos are phone-style snapshots of generic products that we made with an AI image model for this site's tool pages; they are not customer photos. Each after is the unedited result of our own free tool on that photo, made on 13 October 2026 at the size a visitor gets (768px on the long side) and shown without the download mark. Results vary from photo to photo.

What "pure white" really means

A background that looks white is often not RGB 255. Phone photos of a white sheet usually land between 230 and 250, and Amazon's checks can flag that as grey. Fix it in an editor with a levels or curves adjustment, or with a tool that sets the background to exact white.

Our own free tool is not perfect here either: in the tumbler test above, only about 41% of the edge pixels in the model’s JPEG output were exactly 255 (all were 253 or brighter). The checker shows this number for any image.

Main image versus the other six images

The strict rules apply to the main image. The other image slots can show lifestyle scenes, close-ups, size charts, infographics and text. That is where AI scenes and styled backgrounds fit best.

Common reasons main images get suppressed

  • Off-white or grey background, often from a phone photo of a white sheet.
  • A "Best seller" badge, logo overlay or watermark.
  • Props or accessories that are not in the box.
  • Product too small in the frame, or cut off at an edge.
  • Apparel on a mannequin.

FAQ

Questions sellers ask

What size should an Amazon main image be?

At least 1000px on the longest side so shoppers can zoom; 2000px is a common target for a crisp zoom. Amazon accepts 500px as the minimum and up to 10,000px.

Does the background have to be exactly RGB 255?

Yes, Amazon asks for pure white, RGB 255, 255, 255. Near-white backgrounds can be flagged. The free checker on this page counts how many edge pixels are exactly 255.

Can I use AI to make my Amazon main image?

You can edit a real photo of your product, for example to clean up the background, as long as the result shows the item accurately. Do not use a picture of the product made entirely by AI as your main image.

Are Z Product AI downloads ready for Amazon main images?

Not as downloaded. Free downloads are up to 768px on the long side and carry a small zproductai.com mark, and Amazon main images must be 1000px or more with no logos or watermarks. They work well as previews, for social posts and for your own store.

Does the checker upload my photo?

No. It reads the image in your browser and measures it there. Nothing is sent to our server.
