How to Write Etsy Product Descriptions That Get Found and Sell

On Etsy the description has two jobs. Its first lines help the listing get found and make a shopper keep reading; the rest answers the questions that would otherwise stop a sale. The guides we read agree on one simple structure. This page lays it out, gives a template you can fill in, and ends with a weak and a better version of the same listing.

The short answer

  • Open with one or two plain sentences that say what the item is and who it is for, in the words buyers search with. Do not paste the title again or list your tags.
  • Follow with a short details block: materials, exact size, colors, care and what is included.
  • Add personalization and how to order, processing and shipping time, and an honest note on handmade variation, when they apply.
  • Close with a link to a matching item or shop section, so a shopper who is not sure stays in your shop.
  • There is no set length. Answer the questions buyers message you about, then stop.

What each part of an Etsy listing does

Write the first lines for search and for the shopper

Listadum and Listingview both quote the Etsy Seller Handbook: Etsy search considers the keywords and phrases in your listing description. So the opening has to say plainly what the item is, with the phrase a buyer would type, and who it is for. A gift for a new mum, a mug for a coffee lover, a print for a nursery.

Etsy advises against repeating the title word for word, Listadum notes, and none of the guides suggest pasting your tags. One or two natural sentences that use a few of your main phrases read better and still match the search. Skip openers such as "Welcome to my shop" or "Made with love": they are on thousands of listings and tell the shopper nothing.

Then give the details in bullets

Most Etsy shopping happens on a phone, so facts in a short list are easier to find than facts inside a paragraph. Photoroom suggests keeping weight, dimensions, quantity and what is included easy to spot rather than buried in prose. Use the same order on every listing.

  • Materials, and what they mean for the buyer (for example, "solid wood, so it can be sanded and re-oiled").
  • Exact dimensions or sizes, with the unit, and a size chart link for clothing.
  • Colors, and a note when screen colors may differ from the real item.
  • Care: how to wash, clean or store it.
  • What is in the package, and gift wrap if you offer it.
  • For digital downloads: file types, size or resolution, number of files, and a clear line that nothing physical ships.

Cover personalization, shipping and variation

If the item can be personalized, say what can change, any limits such as a maximum number of letters, and how the buyer sends their details. Give the processing time and the shipping method in one clear line each, and point to your shop policies for returns.

Handmade and vintage pieces need one more line. Photoroom recommends disclosing natural variation, such as glaze or dye-lot differences, in the same words on every listing, and for vintage, stating condition, flaws and repairs. A buyer who knows what to expect is less likely to send the item back.

Be exact: every claim must be true

Alura and eFulfillment Service both warn that overselling leads to returns. Use the real measurements, not rounded ones, and leave out words such as "organic", "waterproof" or "colorfast" unless you have checked them. Check that every option you mention exists in the listing, and that the photos match the copy.

End with a link that keeps buyers in your shop

eFulfillment Service and Listingview suggest closing with a link to a matching item or a shop section. A shopper who likes the style but not this exact piece can then find the set, the other color or the smaller size instead of going back to search.

How long should an Etsy description be?

There is no official length. Listingview suggests most effective descriptions run about 150 to 400 words; the other guides give no number. A simpler test: list the questions buyers ask you in messages. If the description answers all of them, it is long enough, and a clear 200 words beats a long story that hides the size.

A fill-in template

Copy the pattern and replace each bracket with your own facts. Leave out any line that does not apply.

  • Opening: [What it is], [main material or style], made for [who it is for or the occasion]. [One line on what makes it different.]
  • Details: Size [exact measurements] / Materials [list] / Colors [list] / Care [how to clean] / Includes [what is in the box].
  • Personalization: [what can change], [any limits], [how to send your details at checkout].
  • Processing and shipping: made or packed in [x] days, ships by [method]. See shop policies for returns.
  • Please note: [handmade variation, or vintage condition and flaws].
  • Closing: [one friendly line] + a link to [the matching item or shop section].

A weak and a better description of the same listing

This is an invented example for a generic handmade mug, not a real listing. It shows the pattern, not exact words to copy.

Weak: "Welcome to my shop! Handmade ceramic mug, ceramic coffee mug, pottery mug, gift for her. Made with love. Message me with questions."

Better: "A hand-thrown ceramic coffee mug in a speckled white glaze, made for slow mornings and for anyone who likes a mug with some weight to it. Each one is thrown and glazed by hand, so no two are quite the same." Then bullets: holds about 12 oz, 9 cm tall; stoneware, food safe and dishwasher safe; made to order in 5 days and shipped boxed; the speckles and glaze shade vary slightly from mug to mug. It ends with a link to the matching plate.

The better version says what the item is and who it suits in the first sentence, answers size, care and shipping questions, is honest about variation, and uses the main phrase naturally instead of as a list. Check every number against your real item before you publish.

Using an AI generator for the first draft

An Etsy product description generator is quick at a first draft if you give it the real facts: the item, materials, size, who it is for, options and shipping time. Then read every line against the item. Photoroom warns not to let a generator add facts you did not give it, such as a material or a care claim. The voice should still sound like you, and you are responsible for what the listing says.

Before you publish

  • The first sentence says what the item is and who it is for, in buyer words.
  • The title is not pasted into the description, and there is no list of tags.
  • Size, materials, colors, care and what is included are in bullets.
  • Personalization, processing time and shipping are stated if they apply.
  • Handmade variation or vintage condition is disclosed.
  • Every claim and number matches the real item and the photos.
  • It ends with a link to a related listing or shop section.

FAQ

Questions sellers ask

What should an Etsy product description include?

A short opening that says what the item is and who it is for, then bullets for materials, size, colors, care and what is included, plus personalization, processing and shipping when they apply, an honest note on handmade variation, and a link to a related listing.

Do Etsy descriptions affect search?

Yes. The seller guides we read quote the Etsy Seller Handbook saying Etsy search considers the keywords and phrases in your description. Search also reads the title, tags, attributes and category, so each part should do its own job.

Should I repeat my title in the description?

No. Etsy advises against copying the title word for word, according to Listadum. Write one or two natural sentences that use a few of your main search phrases instead.

How long should an Etsy description be?

There is no official length. One guide suggests about 150 to 400 words. Answer the questions buyers ask you in messages, then stop.

Should I list my tags in the description?

No. A list of keywords reads badly to shoppers. Use your main phrases naturally in the opening and the body, and keep the tags in the tag fields.

Can AI write my Etsy descriptions?

It can draft them quickly from your item facts. Check every line against the real item, because AI text can add materials, sizes or claims you did not give it.
